Is it the pencil or the last update??

I have an iPad Pro, 11”, 3rd gen. running 17.5.1. Ever since the last update my pencil has become demented. It does things it has never done before. It opens a side menu no matter what I click on. Sometimes when I double click on an item it will open normally but not always. I have looked in the pencil settings and there is nothing there to help.

When looking in settings, it is obvious that it is ready for the newer pencil but I don’t have one of those. There is nothing in there that tells me how to go back to the normal settings.

Has anyone else had this problem? It is driving me crazy.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Update.

For those of you viewing the thread it appears to be a demented pencil. I paired it to a totally different iPad and it continued to do the weird stuff. Don’t have a clue as to why but there you have it.

Was the second iPad that you paired it with also running 17.5.1?

OK, thanks for the info. That doesn't exactly rule out the OS version as the culprit although it is unlikely that's the cause.

I'll try to do some poking around and see if I get similar results. It might not be much help though. My pencil is one of the cheaper third-party knock offs.

Sound like a plan.

The weird thing is that all my other pencils work just fine with the OS. Frustrating to say the least.

If your other pencils are working with this update that's the best my testing would be able to tell you.

It's starting to sound more and more like the pencil may have gone wonky.

Do you have a device that's still on an older OS that you could test with?

I might still have one that hasn’t updated. I will have to check my stash and let you know.

I will do likewise. Don't tell me I'm not the only one that has that kind of stash.

And to think, Mrs. Slydude is always suggesting I get rid of such things.

Sad to say both of my older iPads are too old to pair with a newer magnetic pencil.

Oh no! Perish the thought of getting rid of your stash. You never know when you might need something. Of course that includes the old pencil to go with it.

Are they all the same make and model pencils?

How do you tell? They are all the magnetic type. Not the newest one though.

Definitely 2nd Gen. I was afraid you were talking various versions within this one. They are all flat sided as described in your link.
