When I try to delete a file using Finder I always get a message which requires me to enter my password.

This just started happing a few days ago.

I ran Disk Utility and ran Repair Disk Permissions but that did not help.

Any suggestions on how I can correct this?

Thanks

Sounds like the permissions on your Trash folder have been changed (for whatever reason). Open up Terminal (/Applications/Utilities) and enter the following:
Code:
chmod 700 ~/.Trash
Press enter. Try trashing something again.

Thanks but that didn't work. Still asking for my password.

Is it possible the Secure Empty Trash has been inadvertently turned on?

I think this is under Finder preferences, but I don't recall at the moment.

Thanks. But that's not it. It is not set.

There are 2 solutions on Page 2 and one on Page 3 of this thread. One should solve it for you!

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3195797?start=15&tstart=0

FINALLY a solution! Thanks so much. I've been struggling with this for about a week or so now. Nothing I found (terminal commands, repair permissions, go back in Time Machine) has worked.

After reading half way through the first page of that link I found this solution.

Open your Home folder,
then get info,
in the bottom click on the lock bottun and enter your password, click on + and select your name,
then in the privilege select read/write,
then click on the perefrence icon beside +, apply all enclosed folder.

What a relief to a frustrating, irritating quirk. :)

Ah yes, that solution is a GUI way to accomplish basically what I noted above (and in your thread). What I noted above (and I believe I noted for you as well) accomplishes the same thing but only for the .Trash folder (r/w for your user and no permissions for anyone else is 700 in octal notation). The 700 applied r/w permissions for your user to the .Trash folder so I'm not sure what's different but in the end, if you got it to work, that's all that matters.

The people on that thread said its some Lion issue and never happened before Lion. There were 3 different solutions on that URL I posted. One worked for some but not all. STRANGE! Out of the Twilight Zone as your way should have solved it but did not for many.

What boggles my mind is how that solution is somehow different from what I supplied. Both give the folder r/w permissions. MYmacROX, did you have to authenticate by any chance? I only ask because, although you would have to if you clicked the lock, you shouldn't have to click the lock to make the changes.

The lock is (and always has been) locked and if I've ever made those type of changes I would have to "unlock", and thus enter my admin password.
I don't know why any of the other solutions didn't work for me but I don't think the OS I use had anything to do with it.

As the OP I thought I would let all know that my problems has been solved. I had a friend at work who is a Mac guy from day one take a look at it and it was a "rights" problem.
I am back to normal and that also fix a problem I was having with iPhoto also.

Thanks for all the help and hints.

why Finder requires password when deleting files

I've read the responses to a similar question, but I'm not sure they were also talking about Mac Mini, which is what I have, but I can't find the Terminal (Application/Utilities) on the Mac. Is it the same answer for Mac Minis. If so, where do I find Terminal (Application/Utilities)? Thanks.

Where do you go to open Applications not on the dock?

Do you see your hard drive on the desktop? If so double click and then you will see the Applications folder. Inside Applications is the Utilities Folder.

Also you can from the bar up top, click on Go and then Utilities. That is where Terminal is located.
