hey i am new here, mainly for information purposes.
i am a aspiring video editor, i have done many projects with my schools macs and i am impressed with their ability and performance. thats why i am considering a g5, the new ones with the dual processors. i want to buy the cheapest of the three apple offers which runs a Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 1GHz frontside bus/processor. now i am going to be doing a lot of editing a lot of footage, i am not worried about memory, video card and the hardrive because thats all upgradeable. what i am worried about is the speed. is there a noticable difference between the dual 2GHz and the dual 2.7 when editing, i believe there is, but is it that important. and is the speed upgradeable, can i get any recommendations, suggestions, or advice?

thanks,
a pc user wanting a mac.

Don't tell me that there is a big difference between the dual 2.0 and the dual 2.7. I just bought a dual 2.0 and I like, I like it very much. Lets see what the veterans have to say.

hi,

there is a significant difference in speed between the 2.0 and 2.7 models. But depending on what your honestly going to do with the machine, a 2.0 would most likely be suitable. The 2.7 would be necessary if you were doing hard core professional video editing. if your doing small video editing, a dual 2.0 with atleast 2gb of ram should cover you. there are some people who edit video on imacs and even on g4's.

"Even on G4s..."

One of my friends has a G4 Powermac (SINGLE processor) that impressed me so much while I was home for Christmas, that I decided to switch, and here I am! The dual 2.0 G5 should be just fine for ya- I got a 2.3 cuz I happened upon the chance to afford one and I just *had* to have the fastest computer I could afford.

Even so, the Dual 2.0 or even one of the new iMacs should suit you nicely- depending on your style.

if your doing hardcore editing, then the rule that i would apply is get the most machine you can afford. that way you can have the best technology, and it wont get out-dated as fast.

I have an iMac G5 with 2GB of ram and use Final Cut HD, Premiere, and Flash on it all the time (my living) and it works great, although as soon as i go to the studio and use the dual 2.5 there is a noticable difference, probably because of the processor and the 4GB ram!

get the fastest computer you can, it gets rough on slower machines with video editing especially if you are going ot be doing high end editing and effects.

Another facet to consider is the amount of RAM. While it is true that a more powerful processor will make a difference, the RAM gets factored into it as well. A 2.0 G5 with say, 4 GB of RAM would quite possibly outperform a 2.7 G5 with only 512 MB of RAM. It would depend on the apps running, complexity of the operation, etc.

I would say that either of the G5's would be fine for your intended purpose. If money is a concern, then the dual 2.0 Ghz would serve you nicely. Just be sure to load up on the RAM for either one if you are planning on doing a lot of video work. :black:
