Fried. Turned on my Mac Pro yesterday and instead of a bong, I got this really loud snap. Took it to the local Apple dealer and they saw the problem right off the bat. One of the large capacitors on the logic board had popped. It arced and fried another component, some piece of complex silicon.

So... since I bought it in February of 2009, and I didn't buy AppleCare...

It's out of warranty. >sigh<

So what if it's out of warranty ? I'd try like **** if I were you to get Apple to do the right thing here. Call their customer relations department, and cut through all the nonsense. It's got nothing to do with you that this happened, as it's a faulty product. Id' expect compensation. I don't care if it's Apple or any other manufacturer out there.. .but since Apple do seem to have rather good customer service, I'd say this is a good time to try and put that CS to proper use.

Normally a faulty product out of warranty = the purchaser to pay for the repair bills to said product. And I think Apple are the same. They can just tell you "you should have bought Applecare. But in saying that I know Apple at times tend to go above and beyond the customer call service call of duty. So a polite chat to them might get you some results.

Sorry to hear about this...especially on an expensive Mac Pro.

Any estimates on what it's going to cost to repair?...or if like suggested...maybe if you're lucky, something can be worked out with the Apple Store considering this is sort of a "weird" failure.

Good luck,

Generally Apple will go above and beyond when it comes to these kinds of things, I had a Macbook that had some out of warranty issues all they had to was have a supervisor authorize the repair.

Just remember to be nice and polite.

Well, I talked to Cupertino. I don't have a "real" Apple store here, just an independent dealer and authorized service center, so I have to go on the phone to talk to the mothership. Most of what I've gotten is that they're of course disappointed that this happened, but my warranty is almost two months out. If... if I take it to the Tulsa Apple Store and call ahead, let the CS department know as well... then they can try to see if the store there can service it "with speed and at a minimum of cost to me."

But it's probably going to cost more than a new iMac to replace... and I just can't afford that right now. So... keep your fingers crossed that they can do something for me!

Fingers and toes crossed! :D

In some ways it almost sounds like the power supply failed and put a wrong voltage to the board. Had that happen with several PC's. 3 power supplies all made by the same manufacture popped with flames out the back! In 2 of the 3 machines the Motherboard was shot as was the video card, hard drive controller board on hard drive and one of the DVD ROMS was fried!

Good luck! I hope they are kind to you.

If you paid with a credit card, they may extend the warranty and pay for the repair or replacement. Just a thought.

Good luck, Rick

That's a real shame - just two months out of warranty to have a very clear manufacturer's defect. Having purchased a premier product, one of the most expensive they sell, I'd expect better treatment. Maybe not a direct swap out, but at the very least a warranty repair. Those caps should be easily replaceable if they're just popped.

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
Jamie-Jamie, get on the phone with Apple and work your way up the chain....
Even out of warranty, esp only 2months, Apple should and will take care of this with no cost to you.
In America you will know it as Implied Warranty, and here in Oz it falls under the fitness for purpose clause in the trades and practices act.

Basically what it is, is that if you purchase something for a decent amount of money, that it is expected that the product is fit for it's purpose for a reasonable amount of time, even if out of warranty, the retailer and/or manufacturer is bound by this.
You purchased an iMac for a decent chunk of change, with a reasonable expectation that it is going to be fit for it's purpose for more than 14mths and it's not!
See Implied Warranty in the first link.
Good luck with it all, and stand by your guns! :)

Okay... I just got back from my trek. Here's what they're going to do for me...

Either a new 27" iMac OR a refurbished Mac Pro of identical specification to mine. Suggestions? I just need to call on Monday and talk to the nice guy who's been helping me with this and tell him what I've decided and they'll next-day the thing to me.

They'll include return shipping paid for the old, dead one. I degaussed the hard disks with the speaker magnet from a guitar amplifier, though.

That way nobody can find my questionable pictures :p

You Jamie with questionable pic? I am shocked! :D Grin

That is amazing of them to do that for you. I am not sure what to recommend. What sorts of things did you do on the Mac Pro? That can make the difference as which one to go with.

Also the i7 iMac should be a bit faster than the previous generation iMacs. Are they offering the i7 to you?

Well that sounds pretty nice of them! Is that 27" iMac going to be a Quad-core processor or just the Core 2 Duo? From the sounds of it, I would probably go with the refurbed Mac Pro since it's worth more value than the iMac.

Tough call... but in light of the expansion capabilities of the Mac Pro, I think I'd go with the refurb.

Good call on expansion. The Mac Pro is the only Mac that can really be expanded like that.

I still would like to know what she does with the Mac. The i7 iMacs are quite nice with a wonderful display.

Wow...that is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!:)

Apple never fails to impress me. I was hoping for you that such an odd hardware failure would encourage Apple to do the right thing...and they did!:):):)

Tough call on which one to take. If there was such a thing as "official" processor upgrades for Mac Pro's (like the Powermac G3's & G4's used to have) then I would definitely say get the Mac Pro.

But to be honest (I have a Mac Pro)...and the lack of "official" processor upgrades for Mac Pro's is a little "weird"...considering desktops are supposed to be VERY expandable.

In some ways (because of no official processor upgrades) Mac Pros are no better than iMacs. Of course you can put a boat-load of hard drives & ram into a Mac Pro...as well as run 8 monitors simultaneously...but it would be nice to have a processor upgrade path as well.

That 27" monitor on the iMacs is pretty darn neat...and that would be the BIG "go..no go" decision for me!

Good luck with what you decide,

- Nick
