I've waited to see if anyone else responded with another alternative, because the only way that I know how to do this is with Photoshop.

If you've got any version of Photoshop, you can write a batch program to do this. The trick is that all of the photos would have to be approximately the same pixel size in order for the date stamp to be placed in approximately the same location on the image.

Batch programs can be located in PS under the Windows --> Actions command. You would need to record a new Action, and then automate that action on a specific folder or group of files to run it.

There may be other programs that can do this, but I have often written my own batch programs in PS that have been incredible time savers.

If you're using iPhoto, the answer is, simply, no. You would need to open the photo in a third-party editor (see iPhoto's preferences "Advanced" for this), add your lettering and then save the file and quit the third-party editor.

Here's an app that plays nice with iPhoto and may be just what you're looking for: it's unsupported now (which is why it's free) but still works: Econ Technologies - Portraits & Prints - Overview
