Creating screen savers

I've searched Google to find out how to create my own screen savers, but I've found very little information.

I'd use AppleScript, right?

I'm sure that it wouldn't be easy for me to learn because I'd have to understand how OS X operates.

But, if I should choose to accept the challenge, how would I go about it? Are there any books on creating screen savers? It would have to be screen savers for dummies!

They can be but AppleScript can also be used to do considerably more than is typically done with batch files. They can, for example, be used to control the features of many different programs. Beyond that I'll leave additional comparisons to others with more programming knowledge.
