I have had this issue from start when I switched to iMac from Windows. I have Cox as internet provider. I receive emails immediately to iPhone and iPad and used to get them instantly to my old Windows machine. On iMac there is a delay of 30 min to 2 hours.

If I Quit mail and reopen it, it receives all new mail then. When clicking the Receive New Mail icon nothing happens. I have the mail setup using Macs auto setup on all devices. I have it on Mail Preferences: Check for messages every minute.

Been thinking of that but experience tells me Cox is gonna blame Apple. How is it that the iPhone and iPad work fine if there is something with Cox settings? Sure I can try calling them.

Unless Cox are familiar with Macs, you can be sure that is to be their answer. Not being from your country know nothing of Cox. I am with a Mac specialist ISP. Would beleive in january they hired a new technician to look after their servers. This guy was a Microsoft only specialist and disabled all Mac email connections!

The ISP insisted for four days Apple must have brought out an update they did not know about.

He ain't there now.

So I called Cox and learned the following story. I was told Yosemite and the OS in iPad and iPhone can account for the difference in this delay of receiving email. That part I can see perhaps. Cox has also Web based email and I was asked to see if my email would come there immediately which it did.

So Cox story is that it appears their servers connect then immediately, however, with Apple Mail on Yosemite it must first go through Apples servers also, before I receive it. So essentially they are not to blame.

So could Apple servers be slower on Yosemite? As I wrote before I had the same issue with Mavericks.

Another twist on the whole issue is that the Apple Mail sometimes works immediately.

There's got to be someone else with a Mac desktop and Cox on the Forum with perhaps the same issue or not the same issue.

That's pure baloney! Your mail goes direct from the Cox server to you and does not in any way go through an Apple server. Apple Mail is an application which fetches your mail from the Cox server. Cox is your ISP which means everything goes through them to you including the replies from this forum. Some Cox "know nothing" is making excuses to you for their lousy service.

Yeah, that's what I thought, but not being 100% sure of my case I was not arguing with the lady. Might give them a second call, but I expect nothing really.

So why is the mail going immediately to Cox Web mail but not coming to my iMac. Any theories on that? The more I know the better I could argue with them

Could be a glitch on the Cox side or your Mail preferences on your Mac. One thing you can try is remove the Cox account from your Mac and set it up again from start. Or, go to the Cox web site direct and check to make sure the settings are OK. With an IMAP account, all mail is stored on the Cox server and should immediately be available for download to your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows machine. I have a gmail account and that's how it works with mine.

All mail settings are as Cox recommends. Also the same settings on my iPhone and iPad.

If I remove the Mail account, don't I loose all my Smart mailboxes were I store and file a lot of old mails? I know that the mails are stored on Cox server but I am concerned about the files I use in Mail.

Yes, you will lose your smart mailboxes and any storage of mail you may have in those boxes. Backup first before removing the account. The best way to backup is to export your mail in mbox format. Or use cloning software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. Restoring mail from Time Machine is more complicated.

Well tapio it does not surprise me they would tell you that. Apple Mail has absolutely nothing to do with Apple Servers as chscag said, and the mail does NOT go via the Apple Servers to you.
