Convert older iPod to Windows?

I purchased an iPod for my son in the summer of 2002 (first generation maybe?). He recently traded me his iBook for my desktop Windows machine and would like to use his iPod with his new computer. Is it possible to reformat the older iPod as FAT32 instead of HFS+? If so, what software is needed?
