I've recently switched from pc to mac. My external hd was formatted NTFS. I converted it to Fat32. In order to use Time Machine I think the drive needs to be converted to exFat. How can this be accomplished?

In order to use Time Machine the drive must be formatted to HFS+ (Mac OS Extended Journaled).

Possible to convert the Fat32 drive to HFS without losing data?

No. You will need to copy all the data off that drive first or it will be lost.
