I have a late 2010 MacBook Air with a Mini DisplayPort and a mid 2011 iMac with an original Thunderbolt port. Is there any way to connect the two in order to have a second screen? I’m ok with using either computer as the screen. I’ve read multiple sources on connecting but cannot seem to fine the exact answer for my situation.

If you look at this site, you'll see the 2011 iMac only works with other Macs that have a TB connection. The 2009-2010 generation worked with Macs with the miniDP port. So basically you have an incompatible situation. Either way, you're probably better off getting a separate monitor anyway, the iMac has to be fully running to work in Target Display Mode, so you're wasting a lot of energy.
