Sadly, I have this happen all the time with my ExpressCard memory card reader. Rebooting does the trick (which is very frustrating -- it's not like I'm using a Windows box or something).

You can, if you've got an ExpressCard reader, such as this one (which is the one that I've got -- I paid about $20 for it on uBid).

I'm not sure what the trouble is that the original poster is having. As I mentioned before, I have noticed occasionally that nothing happens in the Finder when I pop in a SD card in, but Aperture will launch and can see the photos on the card. Lacking a copy of Aperture, iPhoto should automatically launch when a memory card from a camera is inserted, whether it's via an ExpressCard or an external USB card reader.

Have you tried rebooting the computer, with the card inserted and the reader plugged in?

I have similar problems, I use a USB card reader with a 2GB CF card, it will show up as soon as I plug it in, but it disconnects frequently for no reason, so is not reliable for downloading photo's or copying files too.

I might have to invest a few more dollars into a decent card reader that is more stable, or find one that plugs into the express card slot.
