S, why would apple register that then?
Companies register multiple domains (.com, .org, .net, etc) for many reasons.
One of the biggest reasons is to avoid confusion with other companies' sites. They buy up names that they feel that a competitor may or may not use, which could be construed as being from their namesake.
For example, Apple would buy up sites that start with "i" (iphone.com for one) so another company couldn't use it and cause confusion or lead a person into thinking that their site had anything to do with Apple when it really doesn't.
Apple could also sell that domain to someone for use and make a profit off of it. Its called "internet real estate". Lots of companies and people do this and make decent profit from it.
Bottom line is, just because Apple owns a domain called iphone.com doesn't mean they are doing anything with it or that they are developing any new device or hardware.
