Can't schedule sleep or shutdown

I had a PB G3 for 5 years, now a G4 for a year, and have never been able to use energy saver to schedule a shutdown or sleep. the time I select comes, and nothing happens at all.

What do you mean? So if you set it for... say "15 minutes" you wait 15 minutes without touching the mouse, or keyboard or anything. And nothing happens?

I set 3:15PM, for shutdown, but at 3:15, nada.

It sounds like there is software that is active in the background…keeping the system from thinking that it is idle.
