My iPad Air used to appear under "Devices" in the iTunes menu on my iMac (10.6.8). Now it doesn't, and there doesn't seem to be any communication between the devices.
Could this be because I opened an iCloud account on the iPad, while my desktop is not cloud-capable?

No, your iPad Air should still show up under iTunes devices. Try turning off your iPad Air, attach it to the iMac (use the side USB port not one on the keyboard), open iTunes, then turn on the iPad Air. See if it appears under devices on the sidebar. Also, you should probably update your iMac to a later version of OS X if possible.

Well, don't I feel foolish? Of course your advice worked. And I will upgrade to Mavericks shortly.

No need to feel foolish and the same thing can still happen even running the latest Mavericks. ;)

Upgrading to Mavericks will give him the advantage of having the latest iTunes and also being able to utilize all the capabilities of iCloud. That was why it was recommended.
