I then hooked up and external firewire drive and tried selecting it and it installed on it - however, there are other things on the disk and I'm not sure I can use it as a start-up disk. It's weird, right. It will not install Sierra on the internal drive but on the external it does? On the external there are now two new folders "System" and "Library" from today ... hmmmm ...
