Hi,
Need your help. Suddenly a problem has developed which is not letting any file download from the internet. Download starts to few kilobytes and then stops and shows zero bytes, with message attached 'failed'. Strangely, files attached to the mail can still be downloaded. Please help!
Many thanks in advance

Which browser are you using to download files? And please include some specs on your Mac and which version of OS X you're using.

Hi Chscag,

Thanks for your prompt response.

I am using OS X 10.7.5.

The problem exist irrespective of the browser. I have tried downloading from 3 different browsers (Firefox, safari and chrome). I have tried following, nothing worked-
resetting browser settings
change downloads destination folder
disable/enabled cookies
remove all security

However strangely I can download anything that comes in my mail, but nothing from any website. This problem surfaced 1 month back out of nowhere and I do not remember downloading anything that may has caused this.

I am really worried now :Grimmace:

Are you able to download anything from the Mac App Store or the iTunes store?

This is a troubleshooting step only:

Please open the Terminal utility, and type this command:

more /etc/hosts <and Return>

This brings up a bunch of text. You can see the next page of it by typing <space bar> and so on.

You can exit it by typing <q>

Please read through it and tell us yes or no -- is there an entry like this:

127.0.0.1 swscan.apple.com

If you can download from the App store might also like to check Apple >System Preferences >Security>General. Check that your settings are not "Allow Downloads from Mac App Store". If so unlock and change to "Mac App Store and identified developers".
