Can't connect to ICloud nightmare

Ever sense I upgraded my Iphone to ios 5 I get this 'This Mac can't connect to ICloud because of a problem with <e-mail address>. I have clicked on the preferences button on the message an d I have checked my E-mail and password and it is correct. I can log on to the web server with that password and my Microsoft Home Outlook server based e-mail also works fine with that password. I press 'Resend Verification Email' and it never sends an e-mail.
this has gone on for a couple of weeks now and my Mac continually asks me for verification. So I have given up on the ICloud as I don't think I will even use it but how do you tell the Mac to quit asking me to have my account verified?
