I have a dual usb iBook which is connected wirelessly to a network. I also have an Alienware PC connected wirelessly. I want to be able to transfer stuff from the iBook (OSX 10.3.4) to the PC (Win XP Pro.). I can connect and copy files when I am on the PC but I can't connect to the PC from my Mac.

"The alias "ALIENWARE" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
This is after I tried double clicking on the alias in network.

I also tried going to the go menu and then "connect to server..." I typed in "smb://192.168.1.25/" that being the ip address of my laptop. It askes me for a user name and password and then gives me the message.

"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://192.168.1.25/" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)."

Pretty much I can connect to the Mac from my PC but I can't connect to the PC from my Mac. I can however connect to another desktop PC from my Mac. Both PC's are using Windows XP pro but the desktop (the one i can connect to) uses FAT32 and the laptop (the one i can't connect to) uses NTFS.

How can I connect to the PC which uses the NTFS file system?
Any suggestions?

hmm... that might be tricky.
NTFS is a propriertory file system, which means that only microsoft knows how to write to it. You should be able to read to the drive though?

Is reformatting to fat32 an option for you? Apart from that maybe there are open source driver/tools that will let you write to ntfs drives??

from my limited linux experience i remember that i encountered this problem whilst trying to write to my ntfs partition with linux, but in that case i found a driver that enabled writing to ntfs...

Make sure you have the right workgroup name in Directory Access under SMB (select it and click Configure). Directory Access is in Apps/Utilities.

AND you cannot connect to an XP machine using NTFS if the username you are using has no password. Go into Control Panel and assign the user a password. Then use Command-K in Finder, connect as you did with smb://<ip address> followed by the drive letter and $, and when the authentication window comes up, verify the workgroup is correct, and enter username/password.

ie: smb://192.168.0.23/c$ for the C: drive share. Other wise if you just do the IP, a window will come up after successful authentication and only show you a drop down list with available Shared Folders.

Just now as a test I changed my Workgroup name to something else in Directory Access, and I got the same error. I changed it back and I was able to log into my Win2000 Server's D: Drive. I attached some screen shots showing the examples.

Let me know how it works out.
