Cannot login to OSX from Windows PC

Strictly followed all the steps to setting up sharing file & folder using smb but when I try to connect to OSX computer, windows asks for username and password. I input the username and password as in mac but it doesn't log in. Using OSX Yosemite and Windows XP Pro (yes still on XP).

Anyone experienced this or any solutions?

mac mini late 2012; mac mini early 2014; old mac mini running centos; new macbook air; iPad;iPhone
I use a couple of PC's, however 7 and 8.1. Both of those seem to connect to the mac fine. I also start and the mac and connect to the pc's ok.
