Your Mac's Specs
iMac = 20-inch, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 320GB HD, Leopard. iPod Nano = 4GB, Silver
I have a D-Link modem router 502T and connect via broadband. My ISP helped me setup the Ethernet connection for me. I have a PPPoe error pop up sometimes after I leave the mac for awhile.

This is what happens..
I'm connected all day..no problem
I leave the mac for 10 mins or longer
I come back to the mac and the LCD is dark but wakes up to desktop afer touching the mouse BUT the mac disconnects and gives me Can't connect to PPPoe server even when the Ethernet is still connected (no problem there).

I rang Apple Support for help and they told me to do this..
System Preferences...Network
PPPoe Service....Advanced
Click on the Tab PPP and 'uncheck' Disconnect If Idle for 10mins
Applied that and turned mac off then on again.

My ISP is not much help at this point (who don't have the new Leopard help guide stuff)

Tonight I left the mac for 20mins and when I came back the LCD was back, but went back into desktop as soon as I touched mouse, but again discoonected and then after trying to connect gave me.."can't connect to PPPoe server".

I don't know what to do, can't ask my ISP since they can't seem to fix this. I'm in New Zealand...any help would be appreciated:)

wow can no one help me out here? Maybe this is a new error for Macs.

Another question, if I'm connecting via Ethernet, do I actually need the PPPoE Service and it's settings? (do they work together? I don't think my ISP supports PPPoE anyways) Should I just remove the PPPoE Service from the list under Network?

When I first turned my iMac on, it asked me about how I connect to the net, and I think I clicked on the PPPoE/PPP??? setting but I'm not 100% sure.

Not clear on what is going on with your connection! If your ISP doesn't use PPPoE then you sure do not want it active. It stands for Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet and is a technology that only the old school phone companies could have come up with. Regardless of what operating system you are using (Leopard, Tiger, Windows XP...) your ISP should tell you what settings to use. What service do you have? Cable, DSL?

Thanks Sherman Homan:) I will double check with my ISP to see about the PPPoE again and then remove it if it's not needed.

I use broadband DSL

Ah, the evils of DSL! It is sort of counterintuitive but the router itself makes the PPPoE connection with your broadband provider. Then your Mac uses plain old vanilla DHCP to connect to the router. In other words, don't use PPPoE on the Mac or any other clients to connect to the router. I assume that your router is configured correctly, otherwise you would have no connection to the net at all.

Well this is all sorted now. My friend who got a iMac and I compared out Network settings and discussed our ISP's. I was right in saying that my ISP doesn't support PPPoE. I removed this setting from the Network and all is good:)
