Ok, i guess what they say about the ipod being a gateway towards mac is true; ever since my father purchased an ipod, we have been interested in a mac.

when we get a mac, we will need speed, and a hardrive has to be over 100 gigs, 512 megs of ram is a must, at the least.

computers will be used for digital photos, itunes, web surfing, word processing, email, instant messaging... you know, the typical family uses.

what do you think.

i know for starters that the powermac is way to much, and just don't like the emac (the bulky shape is not for us)

a portable is still an option.

i have been leaning towards a imac, but the mini, ibook, and powerbook are so nice...

also, could you reccomend an individual, i guess tier? like imac 1.8 17 in, imac 2.0, 17, ect.

all help is appreciated,

I recently (in late April) purchased an iMac G5, with the 17" display, superdrive, 1.8 ghz, and 512 ram, and its my first Mac.
In all I'm pretty satisfied with its performance. Nothing to complain about except for my screen has one rogue pixel that refuses to change from a shade of neon green, but its rarely noticable and I think its just a defect on mine.
I'd recommend the iMac w/ the 17" display and 20 ghz simply because of its design and it's the most powerful out of those which you are looking at.

i would agree that a 2ghz 17in imac would fit the bill nicely! if you have one near by, i'd stop into an apple store or a compusa and play around with it. if nothing else visit the online apple store and check out the specs. it sounds like the imac is what you are looking for though. :black:

I would say if you are doing alot of digital photography, I would try to step up to the 20" Display. I had the 17" and exchanged it for the 20" just because the 20" shows alot more information on the screen, especially when viewing the library in iPhoto.

Juse make sure you have room for it. I didn't realize how big this system is until I got it home. I could no longer fit my iSight on top and have it in my computer hutch. When at the store, everything is so open, it just doesn't seem as big :)

Thanks,
Ray

iMac all the way

The 20" iMac is a really nice computer. You're right, the powermac is probably more computer (and thus, more expense) than you will need.
The mini is an interesting machine simply because it's a good computer in a TINY box, but the one I used at the Apple store was noticeably slower on loading files and programs than the other computers I tried. I've never used an eMac, so I don't know much about them.

I'd bet money that you'll be happy with a 20" iMac though!

For the money I think the iMac is a great deal. Do you already have a decent monitor that you would want to use if you got a mini?
