My router has a host name assigned. On windows I can ping using Host Name, however, on Mac using Terminal, unknown host.

How come I can not ping my router host name, adding .local does not work.

On a Mac no where to see the host name of the router.

Interesting, I don't think I've ever seen a router with a name assigned to it. Usually it only has a router/gateway IP address.

I just find it annoying that Mac is so limited compared to Windows. The host name is given to router in their interface menu.

In windows Cmd mode, nslookup ip, displays router hostname, however, Mac Terminal nsloopup does not, not sure what is displays.

ROBERTS-IMAC:~ robertmyers$ nslookup 192.168.1.1
Server: 8.8.8.8
Address: 8.8.8.8#53

** server can't find 1.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa.: NXDOMAIN (What ever this means)

Well, I cannot answer your question, but for those reading this thread who may be new to macOS's networking analysis, just a few suggestions for starters: 1) Hold down the 'Option Key' when clicking on the Wi-Fi icon at the top - additional information will be shown, including 'Diagnostics' & data on your Wi-Fi connection, including the LAN IP address of your router (see first pic below); and 2) Open 'Network Utility' (2nd pic - more HERE) - numerous network choices are available including PING - below I pinged my router's LAN IP address. Dave :)

Do you use the Google servers in your windows PC as well? Have you tried with the router default DNS servers?
