Can Apple refuse to give you the defective part?

I had my display replaced by Apple store but they refused to give me the defective display. i paid out of pocket- no warranty. Apple care was in affect but damage was not covered. what's your opinion?

My opinion? Apple does not return defective parts to the customer because of liability. Anyway, what would you do with a defective display?
