A quick Google search for PDF to DOCX converters implies that there are many out there. But can anyone recommend a good one? Thanks.

Are you sure?

It looks as if Office 2013, for PCs, can open PDFs but I haven't found anywhere in the Office 2011 suite that will open them as Word docs.

Try Save As

I opened a PDF in LibreOffice and it brought it up but I could only save it as a drawing. You might try doing Save As from Microsoft Word to see if you can save it as a .docx. BTW, I'd like to have this ability myself as I get PDFs that I'd like to read in the Kindle App and the .docx format would allow me to resize without having to scroll all over the place.

Neither Mac Office 2011 Word nor Apple Pages can open a PDF file. Both applications can print to PDF but that's not what you're looking for. There are many converters (PDF to DOCX) that are available from the Mac App Store. I really don't know which one is preferred and the reviews from the App Store are notoriously unreliable. Office 2013 and Office 365 can open PDF files and perhaps later this year when MS releases Mac Office 2015, that too will be able to open them.

Harry: It goes back to the squabble that Microsoft had with Adobe some years ago when MS included the PDF converter for Windows Office 2010. Adobe protested because MS did not pay Adobe for its use. MS later on worked up a deal with Adobe and did eventually offer the converter as a free download. That converter and the one that Apple has had for years is one way = Print to PDF. Going the other way (PDF to DOCX) requires a different license from Adobe. PDF is proprietary to Adobe although it now has become a standard for most government documents. PDF = Portable Document Format
