I have a new Benq HDMI monitor and have tried connecting my MacBook pro using a Cablesson HMDI to Thunderbolt cable. Does not produce a picture for me on the Benq, but it works from the macbook to a Samsung monitor (HDMI).

If I use a normal HDMI to HDMI cable will it work from MacBook Pro to a non-Apple monitor?

Assuming your MacBook Pro has a Thunderbolt output video port (you didn't tell us which model MBP you have) you should be able to use a MiniDisplayPort output adapter to HDMI to the BenQ monitor. And no, it does not matter if the monitor is an Apple brand, the cables are all standard and should work.

Thanks chscag.
Dont have it here but its a pretty new MBP with x2 thunderbolt ports on left side.
I had a HDMI to Thunderbolt cable but it doesn't work. In the end I used a VGA to Thunderbolt adapter and that works. - thanks
Although now its not clear how best to optimise the screen in Preferences >> Display >> Color - there are settings for Color LCD, RRGB, BenQ (model), and other standards. I assume you select the BenQ but perhaps leave it on Color LCD = the default setting.
