My brother has a Powerbook G4 867mhz. He started having problems with the battery not charging, so we took it apart to see if the connector needed to be re-soldered. The connector was fine, but we found a spot on the bottom of the logic board that was burnt. It appears some component was fried and exploded or something. So, it appears we are in need of another logic board, which we have found at a few different places.

Here are my questions:
1. What possible caused this to happen in the first place?

2. Could what caused this in the first place be another part (DC to DC board, battery) that will possibly do the same thing to another motherboard?

I have attached some pics to help in identifying the problem. I circled the area where the piece was burnt/exploded off.

I appreciate any info that can be offered.
Thank You in advance.

you can replace it. www.ifixit.com seems to deal exclusively in mac products.

Yeah, I have already pulled it out and have located a couple of places online that sell them, I am just a little worried that the same thing might happen to the new board if the initial problem was a different component.

Here is another question that I was not 100% sure about:

Will the 1ghz, USB2.0, DVI board work in the case, or are they no compatible. I have mostly read that they are not inter-changable, but saw a few sites that said they were. Anyone actually done this that can chime in?

Once again, thanks for the info.

Mike
