BT Home Hub 5 works without configuring

For some reason my bt home hub 5 works better with my apple extreme even though I have not configured it just plugged it in a rj45 socket on my bt HH 5. My son who connects through an express upstairs says his connection to the internet is better than before, when I had it configured as a repeater from my extreme.???

I have just got the home hub 5. When i RJ45 my time machine to it, it disables the wireless network. On my HH 3 it was wired the same and extended my network a treat.

Any ideas please??
