I intend to use an alternative to Safari which freezes on me several times daily.
Is there one which works better than others on the Mac?

Any reason you are still running Mountain Lion since there've been two more OS X releases?

What Mac do you have? What are the specs and how much free space do you have? Also, its unlikely that Safari is the only app that is freezing..?

Haven't updated only because I didn't want to run into issues.
I have an iMac.
I have a 1GB Hard Drive with 320GB free.
I have 1GB Free in system memory.

Safari is the only programme which freezes for sure. I am forever Force quitting.

What other programs do you have running usually? That's a very high amount of Page ins without a reasonably sized Page outs that a little bit confusing.

Mail, Outlook. Nothing that would use a large amount of memory.
Would you recommend installing the updates for OS?

I assume you mean 1TB?

Assuming you meet these requirements, you could upgrade to Yosemite.

If you don't like Safari and want to run a different browser, you could stay with Mountain Lion although, at some point, you might want to consider an upgrade.

Sorry, yes 1TB. My spec is
2.8GHz Intel Core i7
8GB Memory

Just wondering if it would be worth upgrading the RAM? Is it best to purchase from Apple?

Sounds like you're having issues because you didn't update the OS. I should talk, I'm running 10.6.8, but the highest I can go is Lion.

It can never hurt to have more RAM, assuming you get the right kind for your Mac.
