The brightness level on my Macbook keeps changing on it's own. I know it changes when you switch from adaptor to battery. But when I plug it back in from battery, my brightness goes up, but not to what I set it to. My brightness setting is supposed to be at 6 bars below full. Now it is 9 bars below full with the adaptor plugged in.

It does not save your brightness settings - one based on power and another based on the battery.
There is a default difference between power and battery. If when you change to battery, you increase the brightness, you have increased the brightness for the external power also.
