i'm curious to see what darwin is like as a standalone OS, and since OS X is based on it can i just boot to it or do i have to download it from someplace?

Darwin is the UNIX core at the heart of OS X. You can't "boot" into it. You can, however, use a text-based command line interface by opening Terminal.

Edit: Apparently, after some research, it is POSSIBLE to boot into a Darwin installation, but only after a ton of labor. The procedure will involve a spare external hard drive or re-partitioning your internal disk into two partitions. Also, the forums I visited with the technical know-how on this subject were all having a TON of unresolved issues in this matter. Proceed with caution, I say.
