I run OS 10.14.6 on my iMAC and recently at the bottom of my favourites in Safari EIGHT new folders have appeared called simply "BookmarksBar".
All the folders are empty and the system will not allow me to delete them.
Can anyone explain their purpose or where they have come from?

Have you tried Bookmarks > Edit Bookmarks?

Yes, tried edit bookmarks and get told I cannot remove these.

This should help:

In your Safari bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks:

Bookmark webpages that you want to revisit in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

Just Delete the Empty ones Or any that you do not want Or rename any that you might want to change.

Thanks. These will just not go away.
I have tried deleting with right click and through Edit Bookmarks but they just come back. When deleting with right click that gets rejected with "you cannot delete these bookmarks because they are being synchronised. Try later"
I have run a full scan with Norton and that showed nothing.

Try turning off icloud syncing of bookmarks. In Catalina, it's in System Preferences, iCloud. Just uncheck the Safari item.

That sure sounds logical.
Especially when it says "... because they are being synchronised. Try later"

Too bad the OS is wasting all its time synchronizing, especially considering that most of the folders are empty.

They may not be empty on the device from which the sync is coming. Until the sync is complete, we cannot tell. But ending it by disconnecting from iCloud for Safari should let the OP delete the folders.

Especially if they sync with iCloud for windows. Then they could have a few different browsers syncing.

I seem to have solved the issue............for now at least.
I tried changing their names then deleting and they went away and have not returned - very strange.

I have run a full scan with Norton and that showed nothing.

Unless you're running Windows, we highly recommend you remove Norton AV from your Mac. There are no viruses in the wild that can infect your Mac and Norton is only eating your resources and slowing things down.

There is malware that can get into your Mac but there are free programs that can scan for those: "Malwarebytes" "DetectX Swift"

Norton cannot show anything as there is nothing for it to find.

Thank you for that. Well worth considering but having paid for this year I'll see it out before removing. I have read through the sticky on this forum but that is now so large it just confused me after a while.
As a note, when I ran the full Norton search the other day DID find a single vulnerability which it then corrected. My extra folders have now gone.................just coincidence perhaps.

I would venture that it is 99.99999% likely the "vulnerability" was in an email you got from someone running Windows. And a "vulnerability" that has 0% chance of doing anything to your system.

I know you paid for it for a year, but I really do think you should just uninstall it now. It's doing no good and it is hurting your system performance. Why put up with it?
