Didn’t know what section to ask this question.
over the past few days I have a small blue circle whirling around when I open a document or even on opening finder at times. It’s a similar to the old beach ball That was around before.
any help please.
David.
sorry should have said the only thing different I’ve done is install Onyx.

Thanks I have the latest onyx, I did an install of the onyx to see if it was causing the issue but no. So decided to reinstall it again.
Regarding the blue circle As I was typing the header on my wife's iPad when I got to the last letter of blue the option was there on the keyboard .
Thanks for reply

Hi David

Just for clarity, I think you mean Operating System (OS) rather than "onyx" which is a third party app??

In other words, your computer is running macOS 11 Big Sur (BS), the latest OS? Unless I've misunderstood you.

And, David, you are quite sure that the whirling blue circle isn't in fact the same as the spinning beachball? Maybe it changed its appearance in Big Sur - I haven't upgraded yet so I can't comment.

as I posted earlier I uninstalled the onyx app. Restarted the Mac then about 30min later I decided to have another go at re install the Onyx app? Did another restart
within the past 20min don’t seem to see the blue ball . Maybe something went wrong the first install. Hope so.
many thanks for your help once again. Will let you know how I get on.
merry Christmas. Stay safe.
thanks once again.

Thanks, David. Yes, do please keep in touch. I now understand what you did and the order in which you did it. Let's hope that's the end of things; but we're here if not.

The blue spinning ball indicates the system is waiting for an internet download to finish. What is probably going on is that you have set your system to store documents in iCloud. When you try to open that document or folder, since it's NOT on your Mac, it has to go to iCloud to get it downloaded for you to use. The blue spinner also can show up if you have a network storage device and the transfer is slow over the local area network to get the document to your Mac.

There are ways to get your documents back on your Mac, if you wish to do so. Let us know and we can work through the process with you.

David, the blue spinner originally was for Javascript to show a waiting state, but I think it has been expanded to mean any waiting for a file to arrive to be opened. Apparently it now shows up on both Macs and PCs.

When I copy or drag and drop a file or folder into that Desktop folder they go to the desktop all over the screen there is no folder on the desktop. If I drag that desktop folder in finder to the desktop things not working correctly.
can you please help me out with the desktop issue after the Xmas holidays.

OK, David, I'm a little confused, but we can pick this up later, when you want to tackle it. Your Desktop is, in fact, just another folder, as you have discovered. When you put something in the Desktop folder, the system puts it on the screen for your Desktop. I think that explains what you described. If you try to copy Desktop to the Desktop, it's a circular reference, which is why it doesn't work.

But for now, enjoy your holiday and we can take the issue up later.

Jake. Hope you had a merry Christmas.
Regarding my confusion with documents. I’ve decided to have a go from scratch. Thinking of moving my documents from iCloud to an external drive then replace as they should be installed on my mac. With your help if that’s okay.
Many Thanks
David.

David, thank you for the Christmas wishes. I had a lovely Christmas, and I hope yours was as well.

As for turning off the storage of documents in the Cloud, here is an excellent article for you, with pictures, of how to do that: https://osxdaily.com/2020/07/18/how-enable-disbale-optimize-mac-storage/

Note that in the article all they suggested was to turn off "Optimize Mac Storage." You may also need to click on the "Options" button beside the iCloud Drive entry also shown in the images of that article and then un-check "Desktop & Document Folders" if it is checked there.

Start by making a backup of the drive. Check that the backup is good and then you are ready to start this process.

First, however, consider this: Theoretically, when you turn off the optimization function, it should offer you the opportunity to download all of the documents currently there. As the article says, that can be a lengthy process, depending on how much has been moved there over time. What I would do, personally, is that I would download those documents and other items manually, just to be absolutely sure I had them. But if you do decide to download them manually, they cannot be put in Documents or Desktop, as those two folders will be messed with again by the turning off of the optimization of storage. So what I would do is to copy them from iCloud to either an external drive (if I had one), or to some other folder if I have space on my internal drive. I'd name them something like "Downloaded Documents Folder" or "Downloaded Desktop Folder" or some such. Those folders should NOT be on the Desktop or inside the Documents Folder of your home folder. Put them at the same level as Desktop and Documents. Note that if you have Photos stored in the cloud you will want to download all of those images as well. They all just go into the Photos database, so that is OK.

Now when you follow the article and turn off Optimization, I think you are presented with an option to download everything stored in the cloud. If you did that manually, you don't have to do it again. If you decide to do it again, the system should re-create your Desktop and Documents folders and fill them with what was in the cloud. If you don't download again, the system will create new Desktop and Documents folders and leave them empty. If you choose to go the "don't" path because you downloaded them manually, at this point you can copy or move all of the files from the "Downloaded" folders to these two new empty folders and you are back to where you want to be. Once everything is where you want, you can do whatever you want with the "Downloaded" folders, keep them or trash them. If you choose the "do download" option when offered it, double check that everything you want ended up in Desktop and Documents and then you can do whatever you want with the "Downloaded" versions of those folders.

Depending on your internet speeds and the amount of stuff you have in the cloud, it could be a lengthy process to complete this transfer, so you will need to be patient. And remember that the Desktop you see on the screen is a representation of what is in the Desktop folder on the drive, so don't try to move things from the folder to the screen because they are already there.

Thanks for the update yesterday.
one point. If I put six files into the desktop folder. The six files are on the desktop screen all individual files. If I would put twenty files there would be twenty individual files all over the screen.
that’s my biggest issue.
im not one of the best techie person also a late starter in this world of technology. My job used to be a mechanical engineering.
thanks.

David, be careful playing the "I'm getting old" card here. Lots of seniors on the site. I'm 75 and not the oldest. So I'm kind to my elders here.
