DetectX Swift.app is all you need. You can read up on it and download it from here.

There are no active or live viruses in the wild that can infect a Mac, however, there is Malware. Which is why we recommend DetectX Swift.

However, if your school or job requires you to have an AV app installed, let us know and we will recommend one that is not resource intrusive.

None will do a 'good' job as there are no Mac OS X viruses and Windows viruses cannot execute on the Unix system.

As suggested Malware control via DetectX Swift, a good strong WPA2 security and password and safe browsing techniques such as no porn sites etc.

So this would be a better option, for a MBP, than the free versions of avast & malwarebytes?

(Asking for "a friend" ;) )

Same answer really. The aforementioned apps will all work perfectly well on any Mac computer running recent to current operating systems.
