Best Alternative OS for Mac ?

Hi ! I just got an old PowerBook 1400cs from a friend. I'm wondering what to do with it. I heard it was possible to run alternate OSes on old Macs, like the BeOS, or maybe AmigaOS. Anyone have heard anything precise about that ? And what about Linux ? and NeXt ?
I know some ppl here will find it strange that I want to run anything else than the MacOS, but I don't really need this machine, I only want to experiment with it. And MacOS 7 is a bit too restrictive for me ;)

MacPro 3.0Ghz 16GB RAM, 4x256 Vid, 30''cinema display
I suggest yellowDog Linux if its possible to run on that.

Otherwise OS6 is pretty cool for being old..

i dont know much bout the other OS's but you can run up to 9.1 on that machine
