Bad HD or my iBook is bad?

I have a 12" iBook G3 my HD for some reason wont let me load an OS on it. I bought it off of eBay (the HD that is) and I attempted to load OS X 10.1 yesturday with no avail. The iBook would boot into the install disc then freeze every time. It would also give me an error saying "disc Installer unexpectedly quit (error 1). Im not sure if this is a HD problem for sure but it could possibly be.

I have 512mb Ram in it. Also the HD sometimes pops up (when I hold down Option at start up) with a blue X on it. I click Next Arrow and it seems like its going to load and then does nothing. It still allows me to click the arrow again (so it doesnt totally freeze up). But I cant tell if it is a actual computer problem or my HD is junk.

Any ideas?

There are no firmware updates for any of the white iBooks.
I believe the model iBook you have was part of the group with the logic board problem.
A couple things you could try first would be:
1. Resetting the PRAM
2. Running a Disk Repair from the install CD

If you are still having problems with it after that, you might want to consider replacing the HD.

What kind of install media are you using? Is it a retail version of the OS? I would suggest getting a retail version of at least 10.3 to put on that iBook. Might be cheaper and less hassle than trying to replace the HD first.

I have 10.1 and 10.2.9 retail discs. Thats all I have an I had to borrow them from a guy who works by me. I think im just going to opt for a new HD. Because it shouldnt do that. Sometimes the HD wont even show up and as a bootable option (while hold down Option on start up). Im pretty sure the HD is shot.
