Backing up wih LaCie EHD

Your Mac's Specs
iMac 10.11.6, also ipad
I've been backing up photo files with an external hard drive but it is now failing to Back Up. I get a message saying "Disk was not ejected properly", and the icon disappears from the desktop.

Am on an Imac OS 10.6.8.

I has previously worked well, I can see what files are backed-up. What can do other than get another EXH?
