• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I can't seem to watch AVI's at all on my MacBook Pro. Im a recent Windows-to-Mac convert so bare with me, I only have about a months experience under my belt. All that shows up in Quicktime when I try to open the file is a blank white screen with the correct duration. Please help

Thanks

Make sure you have the divx, xvid & 3ivx codecs installed...
If that doesn't work, try downloading the free VLC player and opening the video with that.

You need codecs to play .avi files on QT(Pro). You can try VLC Player or MPlayer instead. They are are both free. Here are some more info.

Thanks for the help, Im looking into some of the info. The other thing is, when I try to run the .avi file with Quicktime, a message box pops up that say s Quicktime needs components, then it takes me to a page with a bunch of downloads, but I have no idea which one to get...

UPDATE: VLC didn't work, and Flip4Mac has no version for the Intel-based macs.... I have a couple of videos that I really want to watch :(

For QT or QT Pro components, you can download 3ivx,DivX,msmpeg4vi/msmpeg4v2 or FFusion that may work.
