For 2 days straight, my iMac's performance had been retarded by AppOm and the only thing I could do to stop it is to "force quit" it in Monitor.

Another problem I have is an app called Shockmute. When it appears in Applications I use an app called OmniDiskSweeper to "destroy" it from the hard drive but every now and again the app would re-install itself.

Does any one know what I could do to get permanently get rid of AppOm and Shockmute? Thanks.

A warm welcome to Mac-Forums.

The first thing I noted was that Shockmute is regarded by some as malware and needs to be deleted in a particular way:

Here are helpful links:

https://malwarefixes.com/remove-shockmute/
https://junkwareremoval.com/adware/remove-shockmute/

And AppOm is similarly castigated in some areas:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7767878.

My advice, such as it is -

A. Uninstall both shock mute and AppOm. Use the methods described, but one way or another, remove them

B. And, you won't like this, get rid of OmniDiskSweeper.

Instead, what you do need is:

1. Malwarebytes antimalware app for the Mac - https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/. Get the trial version and at the end of the 30 days, just keep it. No need for the paid-for version. Run it and let it get rid of all the malware.

2. Download OnyX from. https://www.titanium-software.fr/en/onyx.html. Make sure to get the version specific to your Mac Operating System. Install, open and choose the automation Tab, keep the defaults and run it.

This is the only "maintenance" app you need and it is widely recommended on our Forums, as is Malwarebytes.

Thank you for the help.

I've followed the first link for Shockmute. Couldn't follow the third link for AppOm because the link within the link wasn't working, but managed to delete files with AppOm in their names (whilst following the fist link)

Downloaded Malwarebytes and OnyX.

Thank you very much for posting back. I think you will find your Mac experience all the better for your actions.

Any problems with this or anything else in the future, please ask away.
