Application load on Boot / Startup

Im very new to my Mac (1 Week) and have been looking for a way to launch a program automatically once it boots. In windows you simply create a reference in the startup folder, does the mac have anything similar?

Would really appreciate some pointers.

In preferences goto the user manager. There is a startup tab. You can add programs you wish to start on boot there.
