I successfully downloaded and installed Gimp and moved it to the Dock, and have been using it for a month or two.
Suddenly when I click on it, a window tells me it won't open because it is in the Trash. (I'm sure I did this myself when I was playing around, but I don't remember why or how!)
Now, I can't return it to how it was. I can find it in the Trash and put it on the desktop, then move it from there to the Dock (where it opens OK). But then I can't get rid of the desktop icon - if I trash it, then Gimp won't open from anywhere (Dock or Applications) because it "is in the Trash".
1 how can I now return things so that it's in the Dock, not on the Desktop, AND opens from the Dock?
2 what might I have done originally to get into this situation?

Move the GIMP icon from the desktop to your Applications folder on the side bar and drop it there. Then open GIMP and tell it to remain in the dock with a right click.
