Why is it that Applecare for the Powerbooks/Macbook Pros cost $100 more than the regular Macbooks?

Because MacBook Pros are more expensive, and therefore need more expensive repairs.

I figured that was the reason why, I would just rather much spend 249 than 349.

No, it is the illusion aka 101 marketing gimick to offer the exact same service at a higher cost because they can. simple as that!
