I am trying to clean up an old MacBook air to migrate the data to a new MacBook. I have OS Catalina and I never noticed how big the mail folder was. So I deleted the Google Account, deleted the contents of the Mail Downloads folder and it made a huge difference.

In preferences I set Attachment Downloads to None and the setting for Remove Unedited Downloads to When Mail Quits.

I also installed Clean My Mac X

After I removed and reattached the Google account and emptied the Mail Downloads folder, Clean my Mac showed that there were no attachment files to be removed. Clean slate.

So then this happens - when I click on an email with picture attachments, the picture is shown in the email (note that I have NOT clicked on the attachment itself - so I think I see a preview). Even though this must be just a preview, it shows up as something in Clean My Mac Mail Attachments, that can be removed. So the preview must create a file or entry that takes up space and that Clean My Mac wants to get rid of. That happens with all emails that I click on that have picture attachments (in none of them I click on the attachment directly).

Now when I click on the attachment directly, it goes to the Mail Downloads folder, as expected. However, I have set that to be cleared "When Mail quits".I quit mail and the file is still in the Mail Downloads folder.

Question 1: So how do I prevent preview from creating files or entries (not in the Mail Download folder but somewhere else - don't know where) that take pup space?

And how do I force Apple mail to clear the Mail Downloads folder when I quit it?

Thanks for the help!
