And my mother. She has had stock in Apple for years. Plus she bought in to a certain pharmaceutical company just before they announced they were coming out with a magical blue pill for men.

lol Nick!

At my rapidly incrasing age by the hour would be better. Never needed that pill Lisa, but was lucky enough to put some retirement super in Apple when they were the pits in 1999 (US$45.60 per share.)

As an Apple user did not want to see them go under and Microsoft putting in several hundred million convinced me.

Hah!

Harry, I bought AAPL at $12 or $13 a bit earlier in the 90s and sold it at $45 in '99, thinking I'd made a killing on my first venture in the market! Lived for a year in Europe (mostly the UK) on that money!

I didn't have a huge number of shares back then (1,000 maybe?), but I'm constantly reminded that if I'd not sold it I'd have 28,000 shares now @ $122 each. You do the math! Doh!

Still, I got back into it last year and have certainly been pleased with the return since then!

"Back up where it was"…what are you referring to?

Before the split Apple stock was worth around $645. Then a 1 to 7 stock split…and the price was $92. Now it's worth $122/share.

$122 does not equal $645.

Nah...you're going to be around for a long time Harry!:) Just imagine what that Apple stock is going to be worth when you hit 90!!!:):)

Not sure if you read this story about a janitor that passed away at 92 leaving 8 million behind ($,$$$,$$$). Not saying you're a janitor.;) But amazing what some smart long-term investing can accomplish!:)

Here's how a janitor amassed an $8M fortune.

Tim Cook's Big Day, Apple Hits 700 Billion! Looks like Harry is getting richer by the day! ;D

What does it look like after yesterday? My prediction is the Market will start to come back after a Republican President is elected. My prediction in getting out of the market last June, was spot on. Vanguard has been holding my $$$, ready to get back in.

With all due to respect to your obvious stock market smarts (I'm not being in any way sarcastic here, Vanguard is a great company), and not wishing to get into a political discussion in any way, the facts of history are clear: the market generally does better under a Democratic president than it does under a Republican one. Not that this data correlates, but that's how it has worked out.

What was great in 2015 were the Dividend payments of 3 x 52¢ and 1 x 47¢ (all USD) which got me my new iMac and hoping for more of the same in 2016.

Thinking back chas my shares cost me about US$46-47 on 30 June, day after I retired. And boy the little Aussie dollar was a bit bigger at the time.

Well Harry... not to worry. The market will come back eventually. Right now everyone's 401K is suffering if they invested heavily in stocks. Even "Texas Tea" is below $28.00 a barrel. The problem is that with interest rates so low the banks are cashing in on us. Paying out around 1.5 to 2.00% on average but charging around 10 to 11% on our credit cards.

Would you believe Charlie our fuel prices in Australia are controlled by the Singapore market and dollar?

With oil at $28 a barrel, this morning I filled my car with 95 octane rating fuel, won't use 10% ethanol rubbish, and still at $1.43 a litre, or $6.44 a gallon! I should have got shares in petroleum companies. Our ultra right wing Government gave Shell and CaLtex approval to close the only two refineries in Australia and import ALL fuel from Singapore, and then leased the port of Darwin, our main Asian defence port, to the PRC for 99 years. I don't know what happens if we go to war with Singapore or Indonesia and need fuel. Heaven forbid we need to get naval ships and supplies out of Darwin to deploy against the PRC.

Gas here on the west coast of Canada dipped under a (Canadian) dollar per litre for the first time in a long time. Mind you, that still works out to $3.79 a gallon or so, but that's in Canadian dollars, so in US dollars that's 50 cents a gallon. :)

(kidding: it would actually mean the Canadian average around here of $1 per liter works out to about $2.61 US per gallon if I've done my sums right)

If it's of any interest, petrol (gas) in the UK has fallen dramatically but even the lowest price around today is equivalent to 6.45USD/Gallon. A year ago or so, it was equivalent to 8.51USD/Gallon. It's always been way more expensive in the UK. And despite the tiny land area of the UK, prices can vary considerably between large cities, smaller towns and rural.

Gasoline prices have always been lower in Texas than most other states. Yesterday it was $1.49/gallon at one of our local fill ups. I have seen it as high as $3.50/gallon back in early 2014.

Funny story I saw a few days ago where a couple gas stations in Michigan, USA were having a "gas price war"…and the cost/gallon got down to $0.47 cents:
