27" iMac mid-2011, ipad.Air 2', iPhone 8+.
Just a general question on how long we can stay with older APPs when upgrades come out. For instance CCC. I have version 4.1.24 and it works fine. Any particular reasons to upgrade to version 5 or can I continue to use the older version? What about when version 6 or 7 comes out? Any general consensus on when to upgrade? NOTE: I only use CCC to back up my internal HD.

While an app such as CCC may work okay with the version of macOS you're currently using, it may require updating in order to continue to work with newer versions of macOS. The same can be said for other apps that may work with a certain version of macOS but cease to work with later versions.

Just about every third party (non-Apple) app and utility has a Web page maintained by the developer to show why each upgrade was released. Usually that page will be called "Version History" or "Release Notes". That is where you should look for guidance on upgrading any particular piece of third party software.
