I have done the workaround and it now works on the iMac which is fantastic. I've done the same workaround on the MBA but unfortunately it doesn't work there. However, as long as I can scan from the iMac I'm happy! It is strange though that the workaround won't work for the MBA. Both the MBA and the iMac are M1 devices and both up to date with the same latest Big Sur 11.5.2. Many many thanks to all who contributed.
