Everytime my wife issues a 'shutdown' on her MacBook Pro laptop (OS X 10.9.5) she get this message:

"Continue with Installation?"

I've check on the App Store/Puchases a nothing is outstanding.
Is there any other place I can look to see what is attempting to finish.
I'm pretty familiar with Unix (Oracle DBA) so is there a Unix command I can use (via Terminal) to see what's outstanding??

You could always start with Activity Monitor to see if a process is running errant. If you feel knowledgable enough to look through the list of processes, give that a go. Otherwise, you can show us the list and we might be able to identify it.

I've run top and just looked at the activity monitor but I have no idea what is trying to finish an install.

Where do I begin to look?

That prompt to Continue and no name is from adware. YOu don't want to let it complete under ANY circumstances. Get AdwareMedic to get rid of the prompt and AdBlock+ or Ghostery to prevent it returning. And don't download anything from CNET or Softonic or Downloads.com. They bundle that kind of crapware with the app you want and you get that kind of prompt. Stick with either the Mac Apple Store or developer websites you KNOW are trustworthy.

I also had this recently - the pop-up window appeared on shutdown, or restart, asking me if I wanted to continue or abort the installation. No idea where it came from.

According to the Apple discussion pages, it's caused by adware.
You may find it in launchpad or in your Applications folder. (May be called Genieo or InstallMac or Reset Search)

There's a thorough removal process described on the Apple support pages, which I will follow when I get the time, here:

Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support

Best. CB

Edited to add: I tried just trashing the app from my applications folder (Was Install Mac, in my case). It seemed to work at first, but now the pop-up is back again on shutdown. Will try the full Apple support instructions on the weekend and report back.

I think the process causing this problem is Genieo or Install Mac
(Don't think I wrote this line, but think it's correct)

I would like to thank everyone who responded to my request.

Turned out to be 'Genieo'. My wife has no idea how I'm not going to push it. That annoying 'Continue the installations?' message is gone and using the link to Mac - Apple Support
I believe I've purged her machine of any instances of Genieo.

I'll keep a close eye on it for the next few days to make sure.

Thanks Again
