PowerMac G3 B&W, 512Mb, 30Gb HDD, speed bumped to 450Mhz(by means of jumper pack), ATI Rage 128
so i was reading around, and i discovered they finally annouced the Power Mac G3 was obselete. I know im proboly a little bit behind but i thought it was funny, im typing this on my main computer which is a Power Mac g3 B&W 400Mhz ocd to 500 mhz. (well my main mac, i have a pc too) So my take on them naming this obselete means that 10.5 will not run on G3s anymore, i realize that 10.5 has quite complex graphics and such but it can all be worked around, if they dont provide 10.5 for g3 they are going to lose alot of users because remarkably alot of people still use the G3, i know of several that still have clamshells and love them, if its going to be a question of just CPU and graphics i personally will spend $250 on a new G4 cpu upgrade, i have a perfectly fine graphics card coming to flash so i can have CI and ill enable QE. After this if my system still doesnt run 10.5 then ill upgrade. (im guessing thats what apple wants you to do.) Okay my rant is over, and im planning on buying a MBP and a Mac Pro soon anyway, but i will still use my B&W its my baby, my first mac.

Tiger is far from dead. Just continue to use Tiger on your G3.

There are still a lot of G3s out there, but I would have thought the people who have kept their G3s a) normally won't use them as their main computer b) wouldn't be too fussed that they can't run Leopard on it.

That model must be a good 7-8 years old now... and to say it can run today's latest and greatest OS is really something. I can't imagine there are that many PCs out there that shipped with Windows 98/2000, and are now running Vista.

I'd love an original iBook... but it would be more of a toy than my main machine (just ordered a MBP actually).

The announcement simply meant that parts are no longer available for the Blue & White models.

It is very unlikely that Tiger will run on a 400MHz G3, or any other seven-year-old machine, but it's still possible that the final version will support later G3s. iBooks with 900MHz G3s were still being sold as recently as 3 years ago.
