This all started when I decided to download Evernote application. I was told I need 10.10 or higher. I want Evernote badly for some projects.

I said no problem I will update! I went to look for updates and there was sierra so I spent 4 hours downloading to find out it won't install. Then I found links for 10.11 and 10.10.5 and the sayed you first need 10.10 . Of course I cannot find that anywhere on the internet I now have a 10.3 download going that will likely say the same thing..."need 10.10" How in the world do I find 10.10 and I assume once 10.10 happens I can go all the way to Sierra.

My mac is a mid 2012 and i want to get a bit more life out of it. It was new in 2013.

Is there hope to upgrade further? Thanks in advance. I am currently on 10.9.5

First off, welcome to the boards!

Apple doesn't make it easy to find their legacy OS's online for download. Generally the App store will only have the latest OS version. Veteran's will have figured out that it's worth downloading (and then backing up) each X.0 version for later install, if you want to stay on older versions for whatever reason - usually compatibility with older hardware or legacy software if you use pro-audio or something else.

Anyway, whatever Mac you have from mid-2012, you should be able to use the latest OS, which is MacOS 10.12 - almost any Mac from 2009 onwards can.

Unless there is a very specific reason you don't want to upgrade via the App store, you should. It's free, you should not have to go searching for dodgy downloads from other sites etc. You do not need to upgrade one version at a time, just download and install Sierra from the App Store.

You can get and download an earlier already compatible Evernote version here:

PS: I've gone back to using Mavericks on my mid-2011 27" iMac after just too many small things just failed to work with Sierra 10.12.2 and after three clean install attempts.

Just saying, "new & improved" isn't always as they suggest.

That's why I'm still driving my 98 Mustang. Besides, have you seen the price of a new Mustang? Yikes! :p

Just to confirm what Zoolook said: It is a good practice to at least download each version of the OS when it is released so that IF you decide you want to move to a more modern OS but not to the latest and greatest, you can. As you have already found out, if you EVER download the upgrades, they show up in the Purchased tab for your AppleID account. Another way to preserve the installers is that after you download them, just move them to an external storage area. I have versions going back to Maverick stored "just in case."

Patrick are you aware MacUpdate is no longer considered safe for downloads including adware?

Yes thanks Harry, I've seen such postings but I've never had any problems and it seems it can depend on how one does the downloads.

I still find it a helpful source for software alternates and suggestions and reviews (even knowing some are just BS) and often just use the developers address that''s always listed with the software and use it to do the download.

Neither do I use the old free "MacUpdate Desktop" version I used to have and use, and avoid any MacUpdate Installer app and obvious adware installers.

I dare say that many don't pay much attention or read or pay attention what some instals are about to do and/or install.

Unfortunately, the last download mishap I encountered last year was to discover a "MacKeeper Install" that was included and lurking with a software download from https://sourceforge.net. That was a real disappointing and surprising eye-opener.
