Im building my own cooling pad for my macbook pro and i was wondering if anyone know whether it would be more beneficial to have air blowing against the base of the computer or having the fans draw air away?

You'll not see any difference between the two options for an external fan on a laptop stand. You're only talking about the difference between pushing or pulling the exact same air across the bottom of the notebook.

I bought a cooling pad for my MBP and have seen no difference in my temps. Since the MBP intake and exhaust are both located at the screen hinge and not at the bottom like most Windows notebooks I fail to see any benefit from using a cooler. Additional airflow may cool the bottom of the MBP but will not actually reach the interior.

Just raising the laptop an inch or two off of what ever surface your on will probably aide in convection cooling did this with my old MBP with a sheet of aluminum and lots
of one inch holes drilled underneath with about a 2 inch bend at the back for better
typing angle.

i guess ill just elevate it then, but i figured since the aluminium unibody pretty much acts as a heat sink, it might help cool it by moving the heat away
