When an airdrop has been sent to my phone, it chimes that it has been queried to accept, however no message appears that can be touched to complete the transfer.
It is possible to successfully send via airdrop to other iPhones. Wifi and blue tooth are on and everyone has been chosen.

Within the Airdrop settings, you have 3 options, one is to not accept from anyone, one is to accept from contacts only and the other is accept from everyone (NEVER use this setting).

In the 2 settings of contacts and everyone, when someone airdrops files to you, you are expected to a get a dialog to accept the transfer.

First, reboot your phone and see if that resolves it. If that doesn't do anything, then do a hard-reset (search for this based on the gen of iPhone you have) and test again.

Don't know how I set up mine but the images go into Camera Roll. Have a look next time.

Sue, the Photos app (and the camera roll) is where the photos end up once you accept the transfer.

But it looks like the OP is not getting the opportunity to accept the transfers.
